Sr. Polymer Engineer/Scientist

The incumbent will provide technical support to the styrenic block copolymer (SBC) market. The incumbent will focus on using TSRC Specialty Materials (TSM) products in compounds for consumer goods, such as wire, cable, automotive, medical devices, and industrial products. The incumbent will work with TSM’s SBC products, specifically SEBS, SEEPS, SEPS, SBS, and SIS.
1.Provide technical support to customers regarding:
◆Selecting TSM’s products.
◆Processing of TSM’s products.
◆Training on TSM’s products.
◆Presenting results and findings of customer’s test requests.
◆Presenting and promoting new products to customers technically.
◆Supporting the start-up of new applications.
◆Investigating and resolving customer complaints.
◆Educating of TSM’s sales and marketing staff on TSM’s products.
2.Provide technical expertise by:
◆Designing and running experiments to qualify TSMs products for customer/market applications or determine the value of TSMs products for a customer/market application.
◆Identifying and developing new applications/markets for TSM’s products.
◆Collaborating with R&D teams to develop and test new products and collect/summarize data.
◆Communicating the product quality needs of customers to the manufacturing teams.
◆Improving laboratory capabilities, including selecting of new equipment and developing of new test methods.
◆Attending industry conferences to meet with new and existing customers, building an understanding of the technical needs, identifying growth opportunities, and monitoring competition.
◆Reviewing trade literature regarding SBCs for consumer goods, wire, cable, automotive, medical devices, and industrial applications.
◆Working with the intellectual property team to document new SBCs, compound formulations or new applications.
3.Abide by all safety procedures and practices applicable to the location and position. Participate in appropriate safety training.
4.Perform other duties assigned by management that fall within the generally expected scope of this position.
◆5 or more years of experience in working directly with customers.
◆5 or more years of laboratory experience in thermoplastic elastomer processing, i.e., extrusion, compounding, or injection molding, and physical testing, characterization of polymeric materials
◆5 or more years of experience working in project teams.
◆Experience of Design of Experiments (DOE)
◆Experience with developing new applications.
◆Experience with SEBS or other hydrogenated SBCs.
◆A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, engineering, or material science is required. A Master’s degree is helpful.
◆An education including elastomers, polymer science, or polymer processing is preferred.
Up to 30% travel with sales staff is expected; destinations include, the United States and South America; possibly Asia and Europe.
This position requires an employee to work in a lab environment. There will be minor exposure to various chemicals and compounds, some of them hazardous and/or flammable. Employee must be able to wear PPE required by the location.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, speak and hear. The employee is required to stand (possibly for long periods of time), use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; the employee may be required, on occasion, to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Employee will be required to travel by air, rail, bus, and car (including rental cars).
